Courtroom Storytelling and Legal Branding: Guides by SBD Marketing

Most people who call a defense lawyer learned what one does from the movies. These guides look at how courtroom films earn an audience’s trust, and how a criminal defense firm can use the same storytelling on its website, attorney bios and Google profile.

What Courtroom Movies Can Teach Criminal Defense Lawyers About Storytelling and Branding

Our main guide covers why courtroom films shape client expectations, how to give your firm a clear point of view, how to write pages where the client is the main character, how to explain the criminal process in plain steps, and which advertising rules apply to client stories and dramatized video.

For criminal defense firms

How SBD Marketing helps defense firms tell a clearer story

SBD Marketing works only with criminal defense law firms, and only with one firm per city. Storytelling and branding are part of how we build and optimize every defense firm website.

  1. Websites built around your point of view
Defense firm websites designed so a visitor learns what you stand for, which charges you handle and how to reach you within the first screen on a phone.
  2. Charge pages written for the client
Pages for the charges you defend that explain the process and the stakes in plain language, written to rank for the searches people make after an arrest.
  3. The same story in AI answers
Consistent firm details and clear answer-style pages so ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity describe your firm accurately when someone asks who to call.

Five storytelling checks for your defense firm website

Each of these takes a few minutes. Read your own site the way a worried family member would.

Count the sentences that start with we

If most of your home page talks about the firm, rewrite it to start from the reader’s situation after an arrest.

Find your point of view

Look for one sentence near the top of your site that says how you practice differently. If you can’t find it, write it.

Read your bio out loud

If it sounds like a resume, add why you do defense work, where you appear and what you tell new clients.

Compare your site and Google profile

Check that the logo, photos, description and tone match. Your firm should feel the same everywhere people find it.

Check stories against the rules

Confirm you have consent for any client story and that testimonials or videos carry the disclaimers your state bar requires.

How we put these guides together

Each guide draws on the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct, state bar advertising guidance, Google’s published documentation and what SBD Marketing sees building defense firm websites. Films are discussed by title in general terms only. Courtroom Storytelling and Legal Branding is researched and published by SBD Marketing.
